Remote worker finds out his employer has been monitoring mouse movement for years after being accidentally copied on an internal email: 'The mask slipped'

Last week, IT accidentally CC'd me on a thread about 'low activity flags.' Turns out our company, has been logging mouse movement and active window time the whole time and I was a flag. I ship more than half my team, but I read docs, stare at walls thinking, and apparently that's slacking because my cursor isn't wiggling.
I dug into the setup. They had a productivity tool installed during onboarding that I'd agreed to two years ago. Nobody told us it tracked every idle second. I checked the settings - there's a dashboard where managers see green bars for activity. Half the team now leaves YouTube playing to keep the bar green.
I compared a few tools to understand what they do - Toggl, Monitask, and Clockify, for example. They all have similar tracking features, but the key difference is whether the employer tells you upfront.
Since then, I've started looking for new roles. Not just because of the tracking, but because finding out felt like the mask slipping. You kinds can't un-know it.
The practical takeaway: check your own setup. If you were handed a laptop with a 'productivity' app you didn't install, assume it sees everything. Ask your IT what data is collected or just run a quick check on your own.
Anyway, I'm sharing this because it's worth knowing what you're actually agreeing to when you install that software. Hope it helps someone else spot the signs early.

Chemical-Ear9126 So, they assume if you're moving your mouse, that you're productive, complete high quality work, a team player, and an excellent communicator and collaborator? Disgusting behaviour and management culture. How about they implement an environment that optimises remote work, including a culture of trust, employee development and support, a high performance framework including clear job objectives, rewards and recognition, flexible hours, and effectively “manage” their teams ?!.
jay-t- How does leaving YouTube open simulate mouse activity?
rawabundance402 Mouse movers are like $20 on Amazon, basically a usb dongle that wiggles your cursor every few minutes, your whole team will be green bar legends
BadgerAdorable1931 Story sounds fake, why would they give you permission to see the dashboard?
OhmHomestead1 My company didn't install any software. Shipped a Dell laptop directly from Dell to me. Only software required to be install was Falcon for security. Though tbh I haven't looked up to see if it does anything else. However my job is currently client supplied work so if they don't provide anything I have nothing to do. Though the company pushes updates to client systems (all websites) sporadically so I do random checks and even PM asks how the sites are working.
Zestyclose-City-3225 Before i retired, some people at my company got caught using mouse jigglers. The company installed tracking software on our computers. It wasn't really a problem for me because our productivity was already tracked monthly & i felt i could either work production or be busy for the tracker. At that point i didn't care, and already had my exit plan in motion.

fergie_89 My company only track how long my laptop has been on. My manager doesn't track me or my teams activity but if I'm showing as offline for more than an hour when it isn't my lunch break I usually get a message. It's due to me doing online courses on my personal laptop because the security is so locked down on the work one I cant access the sites. They actually apologised to me but IT can't allow access to external training for XYZ.
Wise Swordfish4865 The are 20€ devices on Amazon you put your mouse on that constantly move it or something, you'll have 100% productivity.
Candid Helicopter813 Be careful. If you don't give your employer the expected metrics per shift, you'll get PIP. Or they'll mandate you to RTO. No hybrid. Go to Amazon and buy a JIGGLER and make sure you connect it from a different plug or outlet away from your remote connection. Good luck.
my_boy_blu A little wooden bird pendulum that periodically pecks the mouse would solve this problem.
